Afrizal Rom

1999

I am Afrizal and I am an artist from Malang, East Java, inspired by Pop Art and influenced by artists like Yoshitomo Nara and Takashi Murakami. My work explores nostalgia, childhood memories, and bold characters, often using acrylics for their versatility. Art connects me with people and communities, and I dream of hosting a solo exhibition and creating a studio for others to learn and grow. I stay consistent, overcoming challenges by always creating, guided by the philosophy: “Go with the flow, take detours, and face the waves.”

Interview with Afrizal Rom

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am from Malang, East Java. The influence of where I live and work has developed significantly over the past five years. Although Malang does not seem as prominent as Yogyakarta, Bandung, Jakarta, or Bali, many great artists come from Malang.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Anyone can influence me, but my paintings are heavily inspired by the Pop Art style. Many artists serve as my patrons, such as Yoshitomo Nara, Takashi Murakami, Roby Dwi Antono, Ryol, and many others.
How do you define success as an artist?
For me, success as an artist means being beneficial to others and, as much as possible, to many people.
How do you develop your art skills?
I develop my art skills by trying everything possible, which can be described as becoming a multidisciplinary artist. I learn graphic arts, sculpture, installation, performance art, and more.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is to have a studio that many people can use to learn about art. In the near future, I dream of holding a solo exhibition.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My works are heavily inspired by childhood memories, pop cartoons, and my own surroundings.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
A special message might be to evoke nostalgia, especially from childhood.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process stems from personal experiences, particularly childhood memories, such as cartoons. In some of my works, I create and name unique characters. Regarding medium, I do not have a specific preference. I often combine several media like charcoal, oil pastel, soft pastel, markers, colored pencils, and more, but I tend to use acrylic more frequently.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
By staying consistent, no matter what, and always making marks on any medium available.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"Go with the flow, occasionally take a detour, keep swimming, and learn to face the waves."
