Afizz

2001

Hello, I am Afizz and I grew up on Lombok, where the island’s natural beauty deeply shaped my art. Inspired by Basoeki Abdullah, I explore themes of nostalgia, nature, and future aspirations through various techniques and styles. At Eko Nugroho Art Class, I find inspiration in the creativity of others, which fuels my ideas despite challenges like limited resources. For me, success is creating art that connects with people, guided by Edward Hopper’s words: “If I could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint.”

Interview with Afizz

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am from and grew up on Lombok Island, a place with breathtaking natural beauty. The landscapes of mountains and oceans on the island have significantly influenced my early artistic journey. My artworks often have a strong connection to nature.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
One of my biggest influences is Basoeki Abdullah. His landscape and figurative works inspired me greatly during the early stages of my artistic development.
How do you define success as an artist?
For me, success as an artist is when people or the public can feel and enjoy the artworks I create.
How do you develop your art skills?
I develop my art skills through exploration—exploring techniques, ideas, colors, and mediums. I experiment with various painting styles and strive to remain consistent in my creative process.
Describe your dream project.
One of my dream projects is to hold a solo exhibition featuring artworks that represent my journey in the world of fine arts.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My latest work is inspired by childhood nostalgia. I present myself in my artworks as a figure named Pow. The name Pow comes from my childhood nickname, Po, given to me by my parents and neighbors because I had a small build like Po, one of the Teletubbies characters.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Currently, the themes or messages in my works revolve around nostalgia for the past, current events, and dreams for the future. I carefully weave these elements together so that audiences can enjoy and connect with my art.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My current environment plays a significant role in my creative process. My daily activities at Eko Nugroho Art Class serve as both a platform and a learning process in the field of fine arts. Interacting with children from diverse backgrounds and seeing their unique and diverse works inspire me to find new ideas for my creations.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
My primary challenge in creating art is financial—meeting the needs for tools and materials. By exploring easily accessible materials, I can minimize costs and stay productive in my artistic pursuits.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"If I could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint." — Edward Hopper
