Interview with Afiq Andico

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I was born in Situbondo, East Java, on July 9, 2001. Since I was about 1 or 2 years old, I’ve lived in Bali. Living in different parts of Bali has influenced my work significantly. Moving frequently has taught me a lot about life, and I’ve come to understand that perspective shapes how we experience everything. These experiences have impacted how I create and view my art, helping me grow and stay open to learning.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My biggest artistic influence comes from within myself—through observing, listening, feeling, understanding, and learning from what’s happening around me. It’s a continuous process of absorbing and sometimes even forgetting. My art is a reflection of my personal journey, full of layers of emotions and dreams.
How do you define success as an artist?
I define success as staying consistent in my art. Whether or not my work sells is secondary to the process. To me, it’s about expressing what’s inside, creating something meaningful, and pouring my emotions into my work.
How do you develop your art skills?
I develop my skills by being open to various forms of expression. Whether it’s painting, mixed media, video, or random music, I explore different methods to express what’s on my mind. Each piece is an experiment and a lesson, helping me refine my techniques and concepts.
Describe your dream project.
At the moment, I don’t have any specific dream projects planned. Some dreams remain just that—dreams—so I’m content with focusing on the present and letting inspiration guide me naturally.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My latest artwork explores black-and-white concepts. I’ve been experimenting with roof tile paint and letting ideas flow naturally. There’s always a concept behind my work, but I enjoy combining various elements, like writing and painting, to create something unique.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
The main theme I convey is a simple yet profound reflection on hope, love, care, pain, and the quiet peace that comes from embracing these emotions. My work is about finding meaning in simplicity and silence.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process is organic. I allow ideas to flow naturally, but there’s always a concept behind the work. I often mix different media, like writing and painting, to create unique expressions.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I overcome challenges by staying consistent and focused on the process. Whether my work sells or not doesn’t affect my drive to create. The act of creating itself is what keeps me moving forward.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
My favorite quote is: “A writer is someone who is always honest about their lies. A dreamer, however, is someone who works hard in their laziness.”
