Aam Artbrow

1983

I am M. Natsir Amrulloh, also known as Aam Artbrow, an artist from Jombang, East Java. My journey began during my studies in Graphic Design at the State University of Surabaya, where 12 years in the city shaped the urban character of my art. My works are inspired by pop culture, with influences from Takashi Murakami and Andy Warhol. I often explore space-themed narratives, featuring astronauts, whimsical monsters, and imagined planets, blending reality with imagination.

To me, success means consistently creating art, earning from it, and using that foundation to grow. My dream is to establish an art space as both a showcase of my journey and a hub for public interaction and appreciation. I work primarily with acrylic on canvas, embracing challenges in ideation and composition while staying true to my themes. Guided by Andy Warhol's philosophy—"Make art, let others decide its value, and keep creating"—I continue to push boundaries and bring my vision to life.

Interview with Aam Artbrow

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
My name is M. Natsir Amrulloh, also known as Aam Artbrow. I was born in Jombang, East Java. My artistic process has been significantly influenced by my studies in Graphic Design at the State University of Surabaya. Living in Surabaya for 12 years shaped the urban character of my artworks.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My works are heavily influenced by Japanese pop culture, such as Takashi Murakami, and the American artist Andy Warhol.
How do you define success as an artist?
In my opinion, a successful artist is someone who can consistently create art and earn a living from their works, enabling them to continue producing even greater works.
How do you develop your art skills?
I strive to stay updated with everything, both in terms of information and techniques, that helps me bring my ideas to life through art.
Describe your dream project.
I aim to keep creating and dream of building an art space where my works serve as a testament to my artistic journey. This space would also function as a venue for discussions and interactions with the public to appreciate art.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
The main subject in my work is the figure of an astronaut. Recently, Elon Musk and his space exploration projects have inspired me to create space-themed works. These are, of course, infused with my own imagination, including my signature characters such as cute figurative monsters, plants, spacecraft, and imagined planets.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Spiritually, I believe humans are born into the world as strangers, and we return as strangers, shaped by our individual beliefs.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
Technically, I use acrylic paint on canvas as my medium.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I enjoy the process and remain consistent with my themes. The challenge lies in ideation and creation—how to ensure the work remains appealing in terms of color, composition, and concept.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"Don’t think about making art; just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they’re deciding, make even more art." – Andy Warhol.
