Mochamad Samba

1995

I am an artist originally from Depok, now residing in Sukoharjo, where I’ve found inspiration in exploring new artistic media. My work often reflects the emotional challenges of domestic life and interactions with those around me. Influenced by Indonesian maestros like Pak Hanafi and global icons like Jackson Pollock and Jean-Michel Basquiat, I strive to create pieces that resonate deeply and offer new perspectives on life’s complexities.

As a self-taught artist, I have honed my craft through conversations with senior artists and personal exploration. For me, success is creating spaces where others can share their art, inspired by the galleries of my mentors. My dream is to host a solo exhibition that explores the realities of marriage and the beauty of human connection, transforming unspoken emotions into universal narratives. Through fluid techniques and meaningful messages, I aim to turn personal experiences into works that inspire and provoke thought.

Interview with Mochamad Samba

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I currently reside in Sukoharjo, but I originally come from the city of Depok. In Sukoharjo, I have explored new media as a way to address the challenges I face in my domestic life. Some of my works are the result of encounters with new people or neighbors.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My artistic influences include Indonesian maestros such as Pak Hanafi (owner of Galeri Kertas), Om Ugo Untoro, Pak Irawan Karseno, Pak Dedy Sufriadi, as well as Jackson Pollock and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
How do you define success as an artist?
I believe an artist’s success lies in creating a gallery that can serve as a space for other artists to exhibit their work. For example, Pak Hanafi, Om Ugo Untoro, and Pak Dedy Sufriadi have achieved this.
How do you develop your art skills?
Since I am not an academically trained artist, I develop my skills by engaging in discussions with senior artists and reading books.
Describe your dream project.
My ultimate dream project is to hold a solo exhibition that narrates works inspired by domestic life—not just as a form of emotional release, but as a self-reflection on the realities of marriage and whether one is ready for them. In addition to exploring domestic concerns, I also want to create an exhibition featuring works inspired by social media content that highlights the beauty of the human body.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
The main inspiration behind my latest artwork is the struggle of expressing emotions that are deeply felt but hard to articulate. This is something I aim to convey in my work, drawing inspiration from within myself.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Absolutely. Each of my works carries a specific message that provides a new perspective on navigating life’s challenges.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
I don’t adhere to specific techniques or media because I don’t want to be confined to a single method or material.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
When faced with challenges, I strive to persevere and refocus on the story I want to tell through my work.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"Painting is not an attempt to rescue the remnants of memory’s urgency in a figurative depiction on canvas. Instead, it positions past experiences, no matter how powerfully they grip us, as something that cannot be duplicated like an event that is happening or has happened before our eyes, demanding immediate and complete capture."
