Wellwul

1995

My name is Dyah Ayu Wulandari or known as Wellwul. I am from Desa Mas, Ubud, Bali, a region rich in artistic heritage that inspires my work. Influenced by my father, a realist painter, I define success as the ability to connect and inspire through art. I enhance my skills through reading, drawing practice, and engaging with social issues. As a member of the art communities “Iluh Bali” and “Comicotopia,” I collaborate on various projects. My notable works include “Nyama Urip” and the conceptual series “Monologue,” which explore themes of gender, psychology, and the environment. Critics appreciate my unique symbolism and drawing techniques, and I aim to evoke positive energy through my art. I’m eager to explore new techniques and collaborate with diverse artists.

Interview with Wellwul

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I come from Mas Village, Ubud, Bali. Many artists, including sculptors, carvers, and painters, come from my area. This has inspired me in my work.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My biggest artistic influence is my father. He is a realist painter and has been painting long before I was born. He is still my favorite artist.
How do you define success as an artist?
For me, being an artist is not only about self-satisfaction but also about sharing beautiful things with others.
How do you develop your art skills?
I develop my artistic skills by reading extensively, staying informed about current social issues, practicing drawing techniques, deepening my knowledge of semiotics and interpretation of meaning, and enriching my visual references.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is to hold a solo exhibition that addresses social issues and has a direct impact on those matters.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My latest artwork is the “Monologue” series, which explores subjective thoughts that fill my days. It reflects everything from overthinking to self-reflection on my experiences in life, engaging in dialogue with myself to stay aware of my existence.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
I hope that every work I create can provide positive energy to those who experience it. Specific themes like social issues, gender, psychology, and the environment have become the main themes of my work.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My works primarily utilize drawing techniques, often combined with experiments using other methods such as stencils, stamps, and collages.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
When I lose my enthusiasm or experience an art block, I find that reading, writing, and meditation are helpful practices.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
“In the beginning was a point.” — Sadjiman. This quote, from my teacher at ISI Yogyakarta, reflects the process of everything starting from small things and evolving into something greater.
